My name is Victor Hawkins. I am an Elementary Education major at Bowie State University. This will be my final year before my graduation. I enjoy working with Children. My work experience includes been a child care aide, a Group leader, and now an Assistant Director for M-NCPPC Summer Playgrounds. I have also worked as a group leader for St. Paul's Christian Children's center for 6 years. I am a very active person so I love to play basketball, run track and play football. I am currently playing basketball for a church league and soon I will be playing in a new league with my wife. I am married and have been for about two months. Starting a family has made me want to be a teacher even more.
School has been a battle for me. I started school in 2003 at Prince George's Community college. Since then I have had to deal with paying for school with a low paying job so it has taken me awhile to finish with my Bachelor's Degree. Coming up on my final year, I look back on what has brought me so far and I know it is only by faith that I am still here. Alot of my peers either finished school, didn't go to school, or just quit midway to getting their degree. I want to finish out no matter how long it takes.
Philosophy of Education
As I come closer to attaining my goal of becoming a teacher, I find that my philosophy of education has not changed. The same ideas I had when first wanted to become a teacher have simply been reinforced the more I progress. My philosophy of education is simply to help children gain knowledge. I have always seen and experienced what it’s like to not have knowledge. The sad part is that there is so many resources out there that it’s a shame more people do not know. I want to get the children of the world to actively seek and retain this knowledge. These are the leaders of tomorrow whether we accept it or not. They are also going to be the leaders of tomorrow whether we train them or not. We must train them in the way they should go, but also expose them to enough material that they actively want to find more. I feel any subject should hold a little bit of every subject. Math teachers should be somewhat competent in social studies and vice versa. This way there is always positive reinforcement and the adage of a town raising a child can be put to the test. I simply want children to be able to achieve the goals they may set as well as attain the goals they never thought possible. That is my philosophy of education.
Additional Information
My biggest asset is that I have been working with children since I was a child. I have been in daycare since I was 16. The moment I left high school I knew that I wanted to work with children. My work experience includes a tenure of 8 years with Parks and Recreation. I went from an aide to an assistant director. I have also worked with a Christian daycare called St. Paul’s Christian Children’s Center. This is where I worked during the school year. Daycare has brought me a long way with understanding children. I have seen them and taught them in the play atmosphere, now I want to effectively teach them as the formal teacher.
I have a huge interest in sports. The joy of running around with the kids keeps me young at heart and helps me to connect with them. Another bonus is that I can stress a healthy and active lifestyle to promote well-being. I am a member of the Education club and a new club called Advent Fellowship on campus. All of these activities keep my mind healthy and keep me in the teaching mode. The love I have for teaching has grown more and more each semester so I hope that I am able to achieve my goal by taking this step even closer to where I want to be.
